How to Create Goals that Meet You Where You Are

Have you ever had a goal in mind that you wanted to achieve, but couldn’t follow through with?

Anxiety can feel paralyzing and has the ability to stop you from taking action towards your goal.

What I want to help you do, is to meet yourself where you are and create a goal that is right for you, in this moment.

Asking yourself the right questions will help you discover what goal is right and increases your drive of following through. The key is to create a goal that feels challenging, yet realistic to complete.

Questions to Creating a Realistic Goal

  1. What changes in my life do I want to make?

Raising your awareness to understand what you want to change, and what you want to achieve helps solidify the goal.

  2. What is the minimum thing I can do for this goal?

Understanding the smallest step builds your momentum and gets you to start prioritizing your goal.

  3. What is the maximum I can do?

Knowing how much you can devote per week for your goal makes you aware of what may be unrealistic and what may stop you from taking action.

  4. What is in the middle, the realistic stretch?

This question helps you discover a reasonable goal that meets you halfway between the least and most that you can do. This prevents your anxiety from increasing because the steps feels challenging, yet attainable.

  5. What does the first step look like?

Taking baby steps instead of looking at everything that needs to get done decreases overwhelm and increases action.

  6. What may get in the way?

Asking yourself this question prepares you for any roadblocks so if they surface, they do not stop you from taking action.

  7. What will I do if the plan isn’t working?

This question ensures that if your anxiety starts to get in the way, you already know what needs to be done in order to continue taking action towards your goal.

  8. Who can support me in achieving my goal?

Sharing your goal with others makes it more real, and holds you accountable.

Now you’ve created a goal that is reasonable and that meets you with where you currently are. The next steps are to stay accountable and to follow through with the first action step.

Strategies For When Anxiety Gets in the Way

  • Engage in breath work. Breathing is a powerful tool for anxiety because it’s automatic and self-controlled. The way we breathe can be manipulated or adjusted, which brings your heart rate and blood pressure down.

  • Reframe your inner dialogue. This allows you to immediately shift out of victim-mode and change how you feel. This simple switch helps you regain control and leaves you feeling empowered, optimistic and clear.

  • Talk to someone about how you feel. Having vulnerable conversations may be difficult but communicating what is on your mind helps you release those feelings while feeling heard and accepted.

Why did I share this with you?

I want you to learn…

  • How to set and achieve goals that feel right for you.

  • About yourself to the point where you know how to overcome your own procrastination.

  • How to overcome limiting beliefs that are keeping you in anxiety.

  • How to be your own coach which helps you identify, manage and overcome the overwhelming feelings.

I want you to overcome fear, increase self-confidence and raise your awareness.

I want you to realize how powerful you are so you can change your life in ways you would never be able to imagine.

I acknowledge that going within and doing the work is challenging. I know that facing the feelings scares the s*** out of you. I understand that taking action is not always easy. But I also know that continuously resisting, fighting and letting your inner dialogue stop you is exhausting. I know it makes you feel defeated, alone and discouraged because I was once there too.

And I don’t want you to stay there. I want you to feel strong, in control and resilient. I want you to meet yourself where you are and grow into the magical person that you are. I want to help you get there.
